"Between Heaven and Hell: The Drawings of Jusepe de Ribera" brings together at the Meadows Museum at SMU nearly a third of the artist's surviving drawings in the largest exhibition devoted to the artist in more than 25 years. 47 drawings, as well as a selection of prints and paintings, depict everything from crucifixions, Christs, virgins and angels, to the homeless, the deformed, the tortured, and the characters of classical mythology. No other Spanish artist of the period employed such a wide range of subjects and exhibited such technical skill as Ribera. This once-in-a-lifetime experience, to see these fragile and seldom-viewed works of art originating from public and private collections all over the world, should not be missed.
