August 2018 Executive Update




In August, the VisitDallas Sales team partnered with multiple hoteliers and Chef Julian Rodarte of Beto & Son to promote Dallas as a destination at vital conferences and tradeshows, such as the ASAE Annual Meeting and CDX conference. The Margarita Mile continues to be a strong selling point, enticing clients from both coasts.

Shows and Sales Efforts

The VisitDallas Sales team attended vital conferences and tradeshows, learning best practices and selling the city as the ideal meetings and conventions destination.

  •  ASAE Annual Meeting & Exposition - Chicago, IL

    • VisitDallas, partnered with The Omni Dallas, Marriot Dallas and Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center Dallas (KBHCCD) to showcase the city to more than 175 customers. Chef Julian Rodarte of Beto & Son promoted Dallas' Margarita Mile  and the Castro Band performed their original song about Dallas, "Forever Texas."
  • Dallas Annual Hotel Meeting 
    • The bi-annual meeting for the Hotel General Managers, Directors of Sales/Marketing and Directors of Revenue was held at the Westin Galleria Dallas in August.  Presentations were made by STR, CBRE Hotel, Dallas Sports Commission and the VisitDallas Sales Division. 
  • West Coast Client Event 
    • The VisitDallas sales team hosted 20 West Coast senior meeting event managers and chief marketing officers for the second annual Napa Valley Wine Experience and Customer Advisor Council. During this event the sales department updated and reviewed Dallas changes with potential clients.
  • Conference Direct CDX Conference 
    • VisitDallas connected with 33 associates and an estimate of 40 customers during the CDX Conference, which was held in Cleveland, Ohio. Some of the organizations represented were SAS, Texas Association of School Business Officials, Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA) and SPIE.

  • Connect Marketplace
    • During Connect Marketplace in Salt Lake City the sales team conducted 37 client appointments and received 11 leads. Additionally, the sales department sponsored a luncheon where more than 100 planners were in attendance and partnered with AT&T Stadium to sponsor a happy hour for 30 customers. 

Site Visits

The VisitDallas sales team conducted 27 site visits with customers interested in hosting future meetings or conventions in Dallas.



In August, the VisitDallas Marketing and Communications department marketed the Margarita Mile, Edge of Texas and State Fair of Texas through social media and the digital blog.  The Margarita Mile remains successful with 4,000 app downloads and the VisitDallas blog and Facebook impressions continue to grow. Additionally, the Marketing and Communications team hosted four journalists for the TBAAL Riverfront Jazz Festival and hosted six Spanish journalists for the Dali exhibit at the Meadows Museum.




  • The Riverfront Jazz Festival
    • The PR team hosted four journalists for the Riverfront Jazz Festival Labor Day weekend. In addition to experiencing this one-of-a-kind festival, they saw all the sights, sounds and bites of Downtown Dallas.
  • Meadows Dali Press Trip
    • The VisitDallas PR team worked in tandem with Meadows Museum to host six Spanish journalists for the recently opened Dali exhibit, "Poetics of the Small." In addition to experiencing Dallas' thriving arts scene, media members were able to explore a few Dallas neighborhoods and AT&T Stadium.

During the month of August, the VisitDallas Experience team welcomed nine new members, including LimeBike and the Oceanaire Seafood Room located in the Galleria Dallas. Additionally, the Experience team serviced 41 groups, which included the International Association of Fire Chiefs Conference with 11,000 attendees and the Great American Trucking Show with 45,000 attendees.  The Visitor's Center welcomed 3,767 visitors in August.

The Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) team, in collaboration with the Marketing department, continued to work with the City of Dallas and African American Museum to  promote the "Slavery at Jefferson's Monticello: Paradox of Liberty" exhibit and has secured DART as a sponsor. Additionally, President & CEO Phillip J. Jones attended the NCAA Women's Final Four reception and Texas Association for Business State of Affairs. Chief Financial Officer Matt Jones and Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer (CDIO) Cheryl Richards presented awards at the 2018 Dallas Business Journal Women in Business awards to the honorees. The D&I staff has supported multiple events in August, including the second annual TBAAL Riverfront Jazz Festival during Labor Day weekend.

  • President & CEO Phillip J. Jones and the CDIO attended the meet-and-greet reception for the NCAA Women's Final Four . Additionally, Phillip J. Jones attended a State of Affairs Committee on Aug. 13 for the Texas Association for Business.
  • Slavery at Jefferson's Monticello: Paradox of Liberty
    • The D&I team continues to lead the integration effort with key VisitDallas, City of Dallas, African American Museum and Monticello leaders to assist with the execution of the upcoming "Slavery at Jefferson's Monticello: Paradox of Liberty" exhibition that runs Sept. 22- Dec. 31, 2018. Several integral meetings were held during the month of August, including the additional efforts of the Marketing department to secure DART as a sponsor. 
  • Dallas Business Journal
    • As a sponsor of the 2018 Dallas Business Journal Women in Business awards, Matt Jones and Cheryl Richards presented the awards to the honorees.  The Awards Luncheon was held on Aug. 23 at the Omni Dallas Hotel.

The VisitDallas Tourism department, through media outreach, promoted Dallas overseas in Vancouver, Germany and the Netherlands in the month of August. In addition, the Tourism team attended the Student Youth Travel Association Conference to meet with tour operators and discuss student travel. Also, DTIPD funding continues to grow, totaling in an estimate of $1.6 million in approved funding.

  • Student Youth Travel Association Conference
    • Tourism team attended the Student Youth Travel Association conference in Baltimore, including individual meetings with 36 tour operators who specialize in student travel.
  • International Travel
    • Vancouver, Canada
      • The Tourism department planned and implemented a media mission in Vancouver, where we met with over 35 journalists and editors regarding upcoming developments in DFW. For this event, the Tourism team partnered with Visit Fort Worth and Air Canada on the mission.
    • Frankfurt, Germany
      • The team has also finalized a sales and media mission to Germany, to include clients and media in Frankfurt and Munich, which will take place in early September.
    • Netherlands
      • The department hosted a top tour operator from the Netherlands, interested in expanding business to Dallas as a result of the new direct flight from Amsterdam to DFW.
      • Two new direct international flights to DFW were announced by American Airlines in August and seasonal flights from Dublin and Munich will start in late next spring. 

DTIPD Updates

The DTPID's funding of the Arts continues to grow.  For the current fiscal year, DTIPD has 94 applications approved, totaling over $1.6 million in approved funding – and is already solidly into next fiscal year's work, already having approved 38 applications which represent over $750k in funding. 



The Dallas Sports Commission (DSC)  attended the Connect Sports Marketplace in Salt Lake City in August.  Designed for the sports events and tourism industry, Connect Sports gives participants the opportunity to enhance skills, learn about trending topics, network and drive more business at the event that brings together the sports tourism industry's top event organizers, NGBs, suppliers and industry experts.  DSC Executive Director Monica Paul served on the Connect Advisory Board and took part in the board meeting while in Salt Lake.

The DSC also had the opportunity to host several clients in late August at the Dallas Cowboys training camp.  The day included watching the Cowboys practice inside the Ford Center, their indoor practice facility, and a tour of the Cowboys' world headquarters, The Star.
