Tell us about your journey to Dallas and how you got in to the world of wine…
It's like I got bit by a bug when I went on a trip to Napa years ago. I was so intrigued by the wine making process from day one. I've also always had a love and passion for food – and the two go hand in hand. In 2019 I decided to get my first wine certification, and I'm currently a candidate for a WSET level 3. I'm very passionate about education and making wine more approachable.
What makes Dallas home?
Home is where the heart is. My heartbeats - my mother and my father – live in DeSoto, TX. Being in Atlanta for 17 years, it wasn't easy leaving. It's a great city from a social perspective and I miss it all the time, but there was something pulling me back to Dallas. Not only to spend more time with my parents, but it also was the desire to be able to look at Dallas with my adult glasses on, and experience this city, learn this city, and dig out the jewels and nuggets this city has to offer.
Describe your perfect day in Dallas.
I live in the Uptown area, and one of the things I really enjoy is getting out and exploring the city by foot. The perfect day for me is leaving the house without an agenda and returning hours later with great pictures and a great time; walking to Katy Trail and enjoying a food truck lunch, maybe running into the Dallas Museum of Art, and stopping off at different restaurants on the way. Sometimes I like to go and sit at the patio in Yardbird. If I'm headed back home, I'll make a trip to Mi Cocina in West Village.
Where's your favorite place to eat in Dallas?
I love to go to Hudson House; I usually go to the location on Lovers Lane. They have a pretty diverse menu and a great wine list. I enjoy the oysters, which are very fresh. They have good salads and a good cheeseburger, too. Another favorite is The Hawaiian rib-eye steak and a nice glass of red wine from Hillstone Restaurant. Having that puts me in my happy place.
Where can we find you on a weekend afternoon?
I'm usually exploring the city or exploring wine, or both. If I'm just exploring the city, I'm somewhere likely on foot in a two-mile radius of where I live in Uptown. I might be in the Turtle Creek Park area or having lunch. If I'm exploring wine, I'm visiting different wine bars like Veritas Wine Room or Trova Wine and Market, a female-owned spot that opened last July during the pandemic. I actually work there part-time; I did that so I can be around wine and have the opportunity to learn more about wine from a hands-on perspective. You know you love where you work when you go there on an off day.
Tell us about a neighborhood you love.
I enjoy going over to the Lakewood area. I might pop into the Dallas Arboretum with a bottle of wine and a few snacks, or walk around White Rock Lake. I love to sometimes just drive around because I love the houses over there; I think the houses are classic Dallas.
What's your go-to place to take out-of-towners?
I always want to introduce out-of-towners to Tex-Mex. Barbecue, too, but Tex-Mex is always first! And I like places that are off the beaten path and family owned. One of my favorites is Gabriela and Sofia's, a Tex-Mex restaurant located in a shopping center off 75.
What is your favorite Dallas memory?
I would say hanging out with friends at the big St. Patty's Day parade and celebration Dallas does here. I also like going to Mavericks games; HBCU night is always fun. There are activities before the game, then a social mixer after – I miss doing things like that.
What are you looking forward to in 2021?
I'm looking forward to things getting back to normal, or the new version of normal. I'm looking forward to hosting in-person wine related events; even starting out with small groups and transitioning to bigger groups when science says it's safe.
