Where to drink at the State Fair of Texas
Get to your beer break quickly with our guide to the fair's best drinking holes.
Updated August 2026
Twenty-four days, a whole lot of fried food, and more places to grab a drink than most people realize. The State Fair of Texas runs Sept. 25 through Oct. 18, 2026, and between the beer gardens, wine patios, and frozen drinks scattered across Fair Park, there's a spot for whatever you're in the mood for. Here's where to find them.
One thing to know before you go: drinks are bought with State Fair coupons, not cash or card. Coupons run a dollar each, you can buy them at booths around the grounds or online ahead of time, and any you don't use never expire.
Magnolia Beer Garden & Smokehouse
Tucked into the courtyard of the historic Magnolia Lounge, this is the one people call a hidden gem, though it's easy enough to find coming in from Gate 5 near the African American Museum. The patio has plenty of seating and several bars to order from, pouring Texas, craft, and international beers alongside wine. Twinkling lights give it a backyard feel once the sun goes down, which makes it a great place to end your day. Stick around in the evening for live music.
The Beer Barn
This no-frills stop has the cheapest pours on the fairgrounds, usually just a handful of coupons for a cold one. Find it in Cotton Bowl Plaza and grab a beer before the next act takes the stage. The selection is basic, but that's rather the point.
The Grove (State Fair Wine & Beer Garden)
Stop by this State Fair favorite for wine by the glass or bottle, local beer on tap, and a shady place to sit. You'll find it on Nimitz Drive, near the GO TEXAN Pavilion and the Creative Arts Building. Live music plays daily under the umbrellas, and on Friday nights the stand-up series Deep Fried Comedy takes over. If you get hungry, grab a slice of pizza or a cheese tray without giving up your table.
BlueBonnet Roadhouse
You don't have to miss out on football just because you're at the fair. BlueBonnet offers a laidback setup with plenty of TVs, indoor and outdoor seating, and umbrellas for a break from the sun. They pour craft beer, wine, frozen drinks, and wine-based spirits, with a full food menu to go with them. Find them close to the Chevrolet Main Stage, and plan to arrive early if you're coming on Red River Rivalry weekend.
Trio on the Green
Trio serves almost everything in threes, so think beer, wine, and Mason jar cocktails in flights of three, all under a shady stand of oak trees outside the Coliseum. It's a good place to slow down and taste your way through a few things instead of committing to one. Karbach pours samples right alongside it, so you can keep the flight going.
Fernie's Skyway Porch
Rocking chairs, a cold beer, and a straight-on view of Big Tex. Fernie's sits beneath the Texas Skyway and behind Big Tex himself, serving light bites, wine-based cocktails on tap, and a few oddities worth trying, like a cotton candy cocktail. It's one of the more relaxed places to sit for a while at the fair.
Beer Haven
The folks at Beer Haven claim it to be the largest bar on wheels – and we believe it. The 53-foot-long mobile brewery features 60 different local beers, including some special brews themed after State Fair favorites, such as the cotton candy ale. Live music is on their schedule each weekend and they hold beer-making demos every Saturday. Beer Haven may be on wheels, but it's actually not moving around – find it near the Texas Star along MLK Jr. Blvd.
More Places to Pull Up a Chair
The fair keeps adding patios, and a few more are worth putting on your list. Stiffler's Rodeo Lounge pairs barbecue with craft beer, wine, and frozen drinks. Rousso's Fat Bacon has big screens showing the game and the nightly parade going by. Backyard Steak-Out & Pizzeria sits on Nimitz Avenue near the livestock barns with shade, live music, and a parade view of its own. Farm Pac Tavern and Dickel's Smokehouse round out the options if you'd rather eat while you drink.
Make a Trail of It
Several Texas and national breweries pour samples next to the fair's patios, which makes for an easy self-guided tour. Shiner sets up beside the Magnolia Beer Garden, Lone Star next to Rousso's Fat Bacon, Karbach alongside Trio on the Green, Corona by the Cavalcade, and Heineken and Dos Equis near the BlueBonnet Roadhouse. Walk the loop and you'll have covered most of the fairgrounds by the end of it.
Don't Skip the Sippers
The Big Tex Choice Awards, presented by Karbach Brewing Company, has a whole category devoted to drinks, and this year's finalists lean boozy. The Nevins Soft Serve Peach Bellini Float blends peach soft serve with sparkling wine. Rousso's Bacon Jam Caramel Apple Hard Cider does exactly what the name promises, with apple, caramel, and cinnamon sugar plus a smoky bacon jam twist. And the Sunset Soft Serve Rita turns a strawberry-mango margarita into something you eat with a spoon. Check bigtex.com to see which one took the title.
Sip Smart
A few practical notes. Outside alcohol and glass containers aren't allowed through the gates, and you'll need a valid ID showing you're 21 or older to buy a drink. Bags have to meet the fair's clear bag policy, though you can bring your own non-alcoholic drinks in a soft-sided cooler that fits the size limits, as long as you skip loose ice and use ice packs instead.
The best part of planning ahead: take the DART Green Line. Fair Park Station drops you right at the entrance on Parry Avenue, and MLK Jr. Station sits near Gate 6. Extra trains run during the fair, you can buy fare through the GoPass app, and nobody in your group has to skip the beer garden.
