You might be surprised that a sprawling city of skyscrapers and urban attractions also offers an unexpected haven for birdwatchers, with a diverse array of habitats and species. From wetlands to nature preserves, Dallas's natural landscapes provide the perfect backdrop for unforgettable avian adventures.

WIth over 160 miles of parks and trails in the city, as you wander around you'll encounter majestic eagles soaring overhead, tiny hummingbirds flitting through the flowers, and a variety of other fascinating birds. But don’t just take our word for it. Grab your binoculars and see for yourself.

In spring and fall, witness the annual migration of countless bird species, including warblers, orioles, and other colorful migrants.

Summer features vibrant resident birds like cardinals and blue jays, as well as the fascinating process of nesting and raising young.

Winter brings serene landscapes and unique wintering species, such as bald eagles, owls, and various songbirds.

For the most rewarding birding experience, consider waking up early. Birds are most active in the morning, as they are hungry after a night of sleep (hence the whole ‘early bird catches the worm’ saying). California Crossing

In northwest Dallas, this small area is packed with birding potential. Don’t let its size fool you—there’s plenty to see, including water birds and forest species.

Crawford Memorial Park

The south end of this park is an underutilized birding gem. Keep an eye out for sparrows and warblers, especially during migration seasons. It also has a 2 mile loop trail that links soccer fields, baseball fields, picnic areas, a playground and diverse natural areas which is perfect for those days you just need to get your step-count higher.

Cedar Ridge Nature Preserve

Looking for a quick getaway from the hustle and bustle of downtown Dallas? Look no further than Cedar Ridge Preserve. This scenic oasis offers a peaceful escape into nature, with its 600 acres of diverse habitats and stunning views.

Explore the preserve's nine miles of hiking trails, ranging from easy to challenging. Birdwatching enthusiasts will love the opportunity to spot a variety of species, including the rare black-capped Vireo. And don't forget to soak up the beauty of the native trees, grasses, and wildflowers that adorn the landscape.

Kiest Conservation Area

A great alternative to Cedar Ridge, this area recently reopened its nature trail, giving birders new viewpoints into the tree canopy, perfect for spotting forest-dwelling species.

Trinity River Audubon Center

Just southeast of downtown, the Trinity River Audubon Center is a birdwatcher’s dream. And with “Audubon” in the name, you know it's legit! This spot was made for birding, with easy-to-navigate boardwalks winding through man-made wetlands and ponds where you’ll spot coots, ducks, herons, and maybe even some turtles and frogs.

Head to the woods behind the visitor center to catch a Belted Kingfisher or Red-shouldered Hawk flying by, or hike up to the open prairie where summer brings kingbirds and Scissor-tailed Flycatchers, while winter welcomes sparrows and American Kestrels. It’s not a huge area, so you can cover it in about 90 minutes—perfect for a quick escape into nature without leaving the city.

Hines Park

Though compact, this park offers a wide variety of birds and features a new wetland observation deck and trail for prime bird-watching opportunities.

Joppa Preserve

With over 200 species recorded, this preserve is a must-visit for those looking to experience a mix of water and forest birds. It's an excellent spot to catch sight of Pileated Woodpeckers, Red-shouldered Hawks, and a variety of wintering waterfowl.

Jezero Bijela stijena

White Rock Lake is a birding gem just northeast of downtown Dallas, offering free access from sunrise to sunset. It's a hotspot, especially in winter, known for attracting rare gulls like the Little Gull, California Gull, and Iceland Gull. The open water is home to large numbers of Double-crested Cormorants and American White Pelicans, while Ring-billed Gulls and various ducks can be spotted in the sheltered coves.

For the best views, head to the south side of the lake near the dam and spillway, where paved sidewalks make birding easy. The woodland below the dam also offers great opportunities to see woodpeckers, sparrows, and Brown Thrashers.
