Find the Fair's Best-Kept Secrets
The State Fair of Texas is one of the longest running fairs in the nation, with 24 consecutive days of fun from Sept. 25 through Oct. 18, 2026. This year's theme, Stars, Stripes, and Howdies, marks both the fair's 140th year and America's 250th birthday, so there's even more reason to slow down and notice the details most people walk right past. Here are a few of our favorite hidden gems.
The Butter Sculpture
Tucked inside the Creative Arts Building, a local Texas artist carves an entirely new butter sculpture each year to honor that year's theme. This year, expect a tribute to Stars, Stripes, and Howdies, the fair's nod to its own 140th anniversary and the nation's 250th. It's a strange, wonderful bit of craftsmanship that's easy to miss if you're not looking for it.
African American Art
The African American Museum, free with fair admission, houses more than 150 shared treasures spanning African American history and culture. This year, don't miss Mandela: The Official Exhibition, an immersive look at the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela running at the museum through the fall.
Learn About Agriculture
The Competition Kitchen
Pig Races
Head to Chevy Park Plaza to catch the pig races, run four times a day with the pigs dressed in their finest racing silks. It's a short, silly stop that somehow never gets old.
New Attractions
The fair usually has a few surprises up its sleeve each year, whether that's a new show, a new photo op, or something nobody saw coming. Check bigtex.com closer to opening day for what's new in 2026, and keep an eye out as you wander, since some of the best finds aren't announced ahead of time at all.
All-Star Stunt Dog Show
If it's back for 2026, don't skip it. Held at Marine Corps Square, the All-Star Stunt Dog Show has become a fair favorite for its high-flying tricks and crowd-pleasing energy. Check the daily schedule at bigtex.com to confirm showtimes.
You don't need a ticket to catch a great show at the fair. The free Chevrolet Main Stage headlines the 2026 lineup with Clint Black opening night, plus Bowling for Soup, Lee Brice, Kansas, Queensrÿche, RaeLynn, Muscadine Bloodline, Gym Class Heroes, and 3OH!3 throughout the run. Smaller stages keep the music going all day, including the Bud Light Stage near Cotton Bowl Stadium and the White Claw Spotlight Stage at The Grove, which also hosts a stand-up comedy series on Friday nights. Check bigtex.com for the full schedule and set times.
The Thrill of the Rodeo in Fair Park
The historic Fair Park Coliseum hosts rodeo action throughout the run, free with your fair admission. It's an easy way to see a genuine slice of Texas without buying a separate ticket, and the Coliseum itself is worth a look on its own.
Set on Nimitz Drive near the GO TEXAN Pavilion and the Creative Arts Building, The Grove showcases Texas wineries with tastings by the glass or bottle. Live music plays daily, and Friday nights bring a stand-up comedy series to the shaded patio. It's an easy place to slow down in the middle of a long day at the fair.
Tucked beneath the Texas Skyway and behind Big Tex himself, Fernie's Skyway Porch is a rocking-chair retreat with one of the best views on the fairgrounds. Order a cold drink, including a few wine-based cocktails on tap, and watch the fair go by from somewhere quieter than the Midway.
Trio serves nearly everything in threes, from beer and wine flights to Mason jar cocktails, all under a stand of oak trees outside the Coliseum. It's a great spot to taste your way through a few options instead of committing to just one.
Texas SkyWay
Most people ride the Texas Star and call it a day, but the Texas SkyWay gondola is the fair's quieter aerial option. It glides the length of the fairgrounds, fits strollers and wheelchairs, and gives you a rare chance to sit down and see Fair Park from above instead of fighting through it on foot.
Errol McKoy Greenhouse
Right on the Midway, in the middle of all the rides and noise, sits a genuinely peaceful stop: the Errol McKoy Greenhouse, home to Big Tex Urban Farms. It's an easy detour if you need a few minutes away from the crowds, and a nice reminder that the fair has roots in agriculture as much as it does funnel cakes.
The Hall of State on the Esplanade is one of the most striking buildings at Fair Park, and one of the most overlooked. Built in the 1930s, it's free to enter, blissfully air-conditioned, and full of details worth slowing down for, like the inlaid marble floor and the gold Tejas Warrior statue out front. On a hot fair day, it might be the best fifteen minutes you spend at Fair Park.
Mattress Firm Illumination Sensation
Make your way to the reflecting pool on the Esplanade for the Mattress Firm Illumination Sensation, a nightly show of fireworks, water, and light. It typically kicks off around 7:30 p.m., but check the daily schedule at bigtex.com to confirm the exact time before you plan your evening around it.
