The best part: you don't need experience, a partner, or a pair of boots you've already broken in. Several spots on this list teach free lessons before the night gets going, so you can walk in knowing nothing and be on the floor within the hour. Here's where to go.

Location: 2624 Commerce Street
Open since 1963 and covered wall-to-ceiling in decades of customer graffiti, Adair's is the Deep Ellum honky-tonk that everything else gets measured against. The floors are worn soft from years of two-stepping and late-night shuffles, and there's live country music nearly every night from artists you may well be bragging about seeing years from now.
There are no formal lessons here — this is a learn-by-watching room. Grab a burger, find a spot near the floor, and jump in when a song you recognize comes on. Guests under 21 are welcome until 9 p.m., after which it's a 21+ crowd.

Cowboys Red River
Location: 10310 Technology Blvd W
If you want the full Texas-sized version of this, go to Cowboys. The dance floor is enormous, the live country runs Wednesday through Saturday from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m., and there's a mechanical bull if the dancing isn't enough of a workout.
Best of all for beginners: free dance lessons run from 7 to 8 p.m. every night they're open, and all skill levels are welcome. Show up at seven, learn the basics, then stay and put them to work when the band starts. This is an 18+ room, and they book packages for birthdays and bachelorette parties if you're bringing a group.

A Cedar Springs institution and one of the most welcoming dance floors in the city, the Round-Up has built its reputation on teaching people to dance. Free lessons run five days a week: two-step and freestyle on Mondays, partner and line dance on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and line dance on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Saturday sessions run in the afternoon, from 1 to 4 p.m., which makes them an easy add to a weekend itinerary.
Bring a partner or let the staff pair you up — nobody sits out. Wear leather-soled shoes if you have them, and expect to leave knowing at least one dance by name. The Dallas Observer once named it the best place in Dallas to scoot your boots, and the title has stuck.

Gilley's Dallas

Carrying a name made famous by Urban Cowboy, Gilley's is a sprawling Texas entertainment complex just south of the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center — close enough to walk from many downtown hotels. Inside you'll find a hardwood dance floor, a mechanical bull, armadillo races, and Tex-Mex and barbecue when you need a break.
The Jack Daniel's Saloon hosts free live country music on Friday and Saturday nights, and dance instruction is part of the Gilley's experience. It's a favorite for conventions and large groups, so check the calendar before you go — the complex hosts private events alongside its public nights.

Studio 22

If you'd rather build some confidence before a crowd is watching, start here. Studio 22 is a 6,200-square-foot North Dallas facility running more than 120 group classes a month, including country and western styles — two-step, progressive double two-step, country waltz, and country swing.
No partner is required, classes run 90 minutes, and the studio hosts regular social dance parties so you can practice in a low-pressure room before heading to a honky-tonk. Private and group lessons are both available.

Line Dancing in Dallas: What to Know Before You Go
You don't need a partner. That's the whole appeal of line dancing — everyone faces the same direction and does the same steps. Show up alone and you'll be fine.
Arrive early for the free lessons. At most venues, instruction happens before the crowd builds, usually between 7 and 8 p.m. Come late and you've missed the friendliest part of the night.
Skip the brand-new boots. Smooth leather soles slide well and won't fight you on a wooden floor. Rubber-soled sneakers grip and make turning genuinely difficult. If you're buying a first pair, Dallas has no shortage of places to shop for them.
Learn one dance and you can dance all night. A handful of standards come up almost everywhere — the Tush Push, the Cleveland Shuffle, and a basic Texas Two Step will carry you through most of an evening.
Check ages and cover before you go. Policies vary by venue and by night, and some rooms shift to 21+ later in the evening.
