Near the Dallas Farmers Market, Sor Juana reimagines the Mexican botanero for downtown, a mujer-owned spot where bold small plates, crafted cocktails, and easy conversation pull strangers into the same table
Chef Karla Melina builds every dish around belonging, turning sabor, comunidad y cultura into a reason to slow down and stay a while.
Visit Dallas: Can you share the story of this business - how it started and how it’s grown into what it is today?
Sor Juana: Sor Juana began with a simple idea: to recreate the sense of connection we experienced in Mexico through the tradition of the botanero. Alexandra Hernandez and Chef Karla Soria met through an Aztec dance group and bonded over a shared love of culture, food, art, and community. After a trip to Mexico City and Querétaro, Alexandra returned inspired by the cantina and botanero traditions—places where food, drinks, and conversation are inseparable. Around the same time, Karla was exploring a new chapter in her culinary career, and the timing felt right to bring the idea to life. What started as a conversation between friends eventually became Sor Juana, a woman-owned botanero in downtown Dallas dedicated to bringing people together through food, drink, art, and hospitality.
Visit Dallas: What makes this business special or unique within its Dallas neighborhood?
Sor Juana: Sor Juana is the only place in Dallas built around the botanero tradition, where every drink is accompanied by a small bite meant to be shared. It’s a simple idea that encourages people to slow down, settle in, and enjoy each other’s company—often turning a quick drink into a full evening around the table. We’re also fortunate to call a historic building near the Dallas Farmers Market home, and we’ve intentionally preserved many of its original architectural details to honor the space’s history. More than a restaurant or bar, Sor Juana is a gathering place where culture, conversation, and community come together.
Supporting a local business helps us invest back into the city. It supports local jobs, local artists, local vendors, and independent hospitality.Sor Juana
Visit Dallas: How would you describe the personality or energy of this place to someone who’s never visited before?
Sor Juana: Warm, welcoming, and unpretentious. Sor Juana is less about rushing through a meal and more about settling in—whether that’s around a table with friends or at a seat at the bar. We want people to savor each drink, enjoy each dish, and let conversations unfold naturally. The atmosphere feels like being welcomed into someone’s home: good food, thoughtful drinks, and company that makes you want to stay a little longer. At its heart, Sor Juana is a place where strangers can become friends, milestones can be celebrated, and everyone feels like they belong.
Visit Dallas: What role does this business play in the community around it?
Sor Juana: We hope Sor Juana becomes a true third space—a place between work and home where people can gather, catch up, celebrate, and connect. Whether someone is meeting friends after work, enjoying a date night, or stopping in before or after a concert, theater performance, or downtown event, we want Sor Juana to feel welcoming and deeply connected to the community around it. We support local artists and performers, host community events, and create opportunities for cultural exchange and collaboration.
Our goal is to contribute to the vibrancy of downtown Dallas by creating a space where people from different backgrounds can come together, share experiences, and build relationships naturally. Community isn’t a marketing strategy for us—it’s one of the main reasons we opened our doors and a value that guides everything we do.
Visit Dallas: When someone chooses to support a local spot like yours, what does that support help make possible?
Sor Juana: Supporting a local business helps us invest back into the city. It supports local jobs, local artists, local vendors, and independent hospitality. It also allows unique places like Sor Juana to thrive—places that are shaped by the culture and stories of the people who live here. Local businesses give neighborhoods character and create experiences that feel connected to their community rather than a one-size-fits-all model. When you support local, you’re investing in the people and places that make Dallas unique.
Visit Dallas: What do you think keeps people coming back?
Sor Juana: The experience. The food and drinks may bring people through the door, but it’s the sense of connection and hospitality that keeps them coming back. The botanero tradition is rooted in sharing, and guests are often drawn to the slower, more communal pace it creates. We want people to feel welcomed and at ease—to settle in, stay awhile, and enjoy each other’s company. There’s always another bite to share, another drink to enjoy, and another conversation worth having.
Visit Dallas: What’s a favorite story or customer moment that really captures what this business is all about?
Sor Juana: One of my favorite moments is seeing people who arrive as strangers leave having shared a table, a conversation, or even a round of drinks together. We’ve had guests stop in for a quick drink and end up spending hours talking with people they had never met before. By the end of the night, you’d think they had been friends for years. Another thing that always means a lot to us is when guests tell us the space reminds them of home—a family gathering, a favorite cantina, or even a tia’s house in Mexico City. Seeing those memories come back and watching people form new connections in the same space is incredibly rewarding. That’s exactly what the botanero tradition is meant to do: bring people together through hospitality, conversation, and shared experiences.
Visit Dallas: In your view, what does this business add to the culture, creativity, flavor, or personality of the city?
Sor Juana: Dallas is a city shaped by many cultures, traditions, and stories, and we hope Sor Juana contributes to that richness in a meaningful way. While we’re rooted in Mexican culture, what we’re really sharing is a tradition of hospitality centered around gathering, conversation, and community. Through the botanero experience, we invite people to slow down, share a table, and connect with one another. We hope Sor Juana adds another layer to the city’s cultural fabric by offering guests the opportunity to experience the warmth, generosity, and spirit of Mexican cantina and botanero culture—not just through food and drinks, but through the sense of belonging that comes with it. In a city as dynamic and diverse as Dallas, we’re proud to create a space where culture, connection, and community come together.
Visit Dallas: What do customers tend to love most - whether it’s a signature product, a standout experience, or the vibe of the space?
Sor Juana: I think it’s the combination of the atmosphere and the botanas. Guests are often surprised when a small dish arrives shortly after they order a drink because that tradition isn’t very common in Dallas. It’s an unexpected experience that gives people a glimpse into our kitchen, our hospitality, and the care we put into every part of the menu—even the complimentary bites.
Many guests have told us that those small surprises become some of their favorite memories of the visit. On the food side, the Tablitas and Macha Cambray have quickly become favorites, especially for the macha salsa that the potatoes are tossed in. Beyond the food, people love the historic character of the space, the thoughtful details throughout, and the flexibility of the experience—they can stop in for a quick drink or settle in and spend the entire evening with us.

Visit Dallas: What’s something people would be surprised to learn about this business or the team behind it?
Sor Juana: Many people are surprised by the story behind Sor Juana. When they walk into the space and learn about the building’s history, they’re often amazed by its age and the care we took to preserve its original character while thoughtfully integrating a new kitchen, plumbing, and electrical systems to prepare it for its next chapter. They’re also surprised to learn that traditional cantinas were historically spaces where women were not welcome. Sor Juana is a woman-owned business, and in many ways, we’re reimagining that tradition for today—honoring the spirit of the cantina while creating a space that is welcoming, inclusive, and open to everyone. At its heart, Sor Juana is about bringing people together through hospitality, conversation, and shared experiences while offering a glimpse into the warmth, generosity, and community-centered spirit of Mexican cantina and botanero culture.
Visit Dallas: How do you and your team aim to make people feel when they walk through your doors?
Sor Juana: At home. We want people to feel welcomed, seen, and comfortable from the moment they walk through our doors. Whether they’re celebrating a milestone, meeting friends after work, enjoying a date night, or stopping in on their own, our goal is for everyone to feel like they belong here. Sor Juana is a place where you can come as you are, settle in, and enjoy the company of those around you. Hospitality is at the heart of what we do, and we want every guest to leave feeling cared for, connected, and eager to return and try something else.
Visit Dallas: If someone visited for the first time, what should they absolutely not miss?
Sor Juana: Every cocktail on our menu is a Mexican reinterpretation of a classic, often inspired by a story, ingredient, or piece of history. Our bar manager, Saúl Hernandez, loves sharing the inspiration behind the drinks and helping guests find something they’ll enjoy. Let the botanas arrive at the table, settle in, and enjoy the slower pace of the experience. I’d also encourage people to take in the details of the space—the preserved historic building, the artwork, and the personal touches throughout. Together, they tell the story of who we are and what we’re trying to create at Sor Juana.
Visit Dallas: Why do you think supporting local businesses is particularly meaningful here in Dallas?
Sor Juana: Dallas has an incredible entrepreneurial spirit. Supporting local businesses means preserving the character of our neighborhoods and creating opportunities for independent ideas to thrive. Every local business adds something unique to the city’s identity, and those are the places that make Dallas feel like Dallas.
Visit Dallas: What do you wish more people knew about this business?
Sor Juana: Our menu draws inspiration from Mexican botanero culture, where small dishes are meant to be shared and enjoyed over conversation. Our cocktails are thoughtful reinterpretations of classic drinks, incorporating Mexican ingredients, history, and cultural influences. The building itself reflects that same philosophy. We worked hard to preserve its historic character while thoughtfully restoring it for a new chapter, creating a space that feels both rooted in the past and welcoming in the present.
Every detail, from the botanas that accompany a drink to the artwork on the walls, is intentional. We want guests to experience not only great food and cocktails, but also the hospitality, culture, and sense of connection that inspired Sor Juana in the first place. At its heart, Sor Juana is a place where people can gather, share stories, create memories, and feel part of a community.
Visit Dallas: If you could share one message with someone deciding whether to shop, dine, or visit here, what would you want them to know?
Sor Juana: Come as you are. Whether you’re joining us for a cocktail, dinner, or an entire evening, we hope you’ll find more than a meal—you’ll find a place to slow down, connect, and enjoy the company of those around you. Sor Juana is rooted in the belief that food, drinks, and conversation have the power to bring people together. Located across from the Dallas Farmers Market, with plenty of nearby parking and views of the downtown skyline, we’re a place to settle in, stay awhile, and make meaningful memories. That’s what Sor Juana is all about.

Visit Dallas: What’s on the horizon that you’re excited about, whether it’s a new idea, a seasonal offering, an expansion, or something simple you’re proud of?
Sor Juana: We’re excited about continuing to grow as a gathering place for the community. That includes expanding our events, collaborating with local artists and performers, and introducing new food and drink offerings while staying true to the botanero tradition.
One thing we’re especially looking forward to is the World Cup. Cantinas have long served as places where people come together to watch soccer, celebrate, and connect, and we’re excited to bring that spirit to Dallas. With visitors from around the world coming to the city, we see it as an opportunity to welcome new faces into Sor Juana and share a bit of our culture through hospitality, food, and conversation. That sense of community and shared experience is at the heart of what we’re trying to create. We’re still at the beginning of our story, and we’re excited to continue building a space where culture, conversation, and connection can thrive.
