AURORA Biennial x Dallas Contemporary: Monira Al Qadiri Public Opening Reception
To kick off the 7th AURORA Biennial, States of Becoming, join AURORA and Dallas Contemporary for a special opening of two works by Berlin-based Kuwaiti artist Monira Al Qadiri.
Exploring the Arabian Gulf’s pre- and post-oil histories, the works trace the region’s transformation from a pearl-based economy to one shaped by oil extraction. Alien Technology (Tower) (2023), is a large-scale sculpture modeled on an industrial oil drill bit, resembling bioluminescent marine life and futuristic organic machines. Diver (2018), an immersive video installation, features synchronized swimmers in iridescent suits that evoke the sheen of both pearls and oil, choreographed to a traditional pearl-diving song.
Thanks to the support of the Eugene McDermott Foundation, Dallas Contemporary will continue to offer free admission through 2026. This program is supported in part by the city of Dallas Arts and Culture.
