The shortest month of the year brings plenty of ways to discover Dallas. From Black History Month, Valentine's Day, and a few special days in between, there's much to celebrate this month! Check out a few events, restaurants, landmarks, and attractions you must experience in Dallas this February.
Visit These Landmarks and Attractions
Take a visit to the Pan-African Connection Bookstore in South Dallas. More than a bookstore, this art gallery and resource center specializes in books on the history, health, and forward movement of Black people. They also offer educational programming, wellness classes, and community conversations.
Freedman's Memorial Cemetery was a burial ground for Dallas' early African American population in 1861 and one of the largest Freedman Cemeteries in the country. You can visit the memorial located at North Central Expressway (Highway 75) and Lemmon Avenue.
The African American Museum in Fair Park is devoted to the preservation and display of African American artistic, cultural, and historical materials. The current exhibitions are "Protecting Cultural Memory," offers visitors a rare behind-the-scenes perspective on the Museum’s ongoing commitment to preserving, conserving, and safeguarding the priceless art, artifacts, and archival materials entrusted to its care, and "Sunday Call to Church: The Art of Clementine Hunter," which invites visitors into the colorful world of one of America’s most admired self-taught folk artists.
Dine at These Restaurants
Terra | Eataly in NorthPark Center is the perfect place to "wow" a special someone in an intimate, Italian setting. Off the Bone Barbeque in the Cedars District is a Black-owned barbecue spot that won't disappoint. Their famous pecan-smoked baby back ribs, as well as off-the-bone tacos, con queso mac and cheese, and peach cobbler are just a few highlights.
Tour the Kimpton Pittman Hotel
The Kimpton Pittman Hotel in Deep Ellum, originally built in 1916 by African American architect William Sidney Pittman, reopened its doors in 2020 and is a welcomed addition. The neighborhood hotel offers creative artwork throughout its floors, an outdoor deck for live music and a wonderful restaurant serving seasonal American fare.
