For All the Saints: Latin American Baroque
For All the Saints: Latin American Baroque
Join guest conductor Billy Traylor for an opening concert of works by Spanish, Italian and criollo composers working in the Americas, with music written in honour of venerated saints and images.
“Dallas ensemble to present rare music from colonial-era Latin America”
The program will be curated by guest conductor Billy Traylor, a doctoral candidate in musicology at the University of North Texas and a specialist in this repertoire. Equally comfortable in the concert hall as in the archive, Traylor is the founder and Artistic Director of the Austin Baroque Orchestra. The concert’s music is drawn from archives in Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, Cuba, and Brazil. Despite being so far from Europe, Iberian New World cathedrals, churches, and missions produced a quantity and quality of music that easily rivaled that of Seville, Toledo, or Zaragoza. Though this music was composed for religious use, much of it is quite secular in style, exhibiting the influence of Spanish theatrical music and Italianate opera. Featured composers include Antonio de Salazar, Manuel de Sumaya, Juan de Araujo, among others.
