Now's your chance to come face-to-face with a herd of friendly giraffes in one of the most unique environments around.

Located within minutes of Downtown Dallas, the Dallas Zoo's 106 acres is home to thousands of animals, including a larger-than-life 67 ½ foot tall giraffe sculpture that marks the zoo's entrance.

Open seven days a week, the Dallas Zoo is arguably one the top sports for year-round family fun. And if feeding a giraffe is on your bucket list, this is the place go! The sprawling zoo is home to the Giants of the Savanna exhibit that offers visitors a glimpse into the lives of elephants, zebras, ostriches, lions and of course, a family of giraffes.

Visit the Diane and Hal Brierley Giraffe Ridge where you can have your very own personal encounter with these docile mammals who love fresh pieces of romaine lettuce. For only $5, guests can purchase a handful of edible greens that make for a perfect giraffe snack. It's always a welcome treat for these herbivores who eat fruits, veggies and even branches that are collected at the zoo. The zoo's large males can eat up to 75 pounds of food in a single day!

It's Time to Feed the Giraffes

And while this fantastic exhibit has done everything to bridge the gap between guests and the tallest animals on land, there is a certain giraffe etiquette that should be used:

  1. Do not feed the giraffes food from your own home. They are on a strict diet.
  2. Be gentle if you want to pet the giraffes. They're very touchy about being touched.
  3. Watch your personal belongings. Giraffes are not trained to fetch.

But the fun doesn't stop there! The Dallas Zoo has plenty of other amazing animals and special exhibits that will keep you and your family entertained all day long. Learn from friendly zoologists during daily Keeper Talks, see how gorillas interact with one another at the Gorilla Research Center or see the fastest felines on Earth at the Cheetah Encounter.
