There's been a lot of talk of Van Gogh experiences in Dallas this year – and to be honest, we were confused about them too! Here's a run-down of the Van Gogh experiences, exhibits and events we know are happening this year. We'll keep adding to this list as we learn more.
Immersive Van Gogh
Now through Oct. 31, 2021
If your friends have been chatting about Van Gogh this year, it's likely they are referencing this particular event. Made popular from its moment in the spotlight on Netflix's Emily in Paris, this exhibit uses digital and video mapping to bring to life 40 of Van Gogh's paintings. The imagery is also scored with original compositions by an Italian composer, alongside more familiar classic and contemporary songs.
Tickets to this exhibit start at $39. While the location was kept secret for most of the year, we now know the event takes place in Downtown Dallas. Along with the immersive exhibit, there will also be a Van Gogh-themed gift shop.
Note: There is a very similar event happening in neighboring Arlington titled Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience. Learn more about that event here.
Van Gogh and the Olive Groves
Dallas Museum of Art (DMA)
Oct. 17, 2021 – Feb. 6, 2022
Produced in collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the DMA will present Van Gogh and the Olive Groves starting mid-October. The exhibit's stop at the DMA is its only North American venue before returning overseas, and it stands out on our list of 2021 Van Gogh experiences as the only one featuring actual Van Gogh works of art.
The collection includes 15 paintings and is the first exhibition dedicated to the artists' olive grove series, completed near the end of his life. Read more about the exhibition's importance here.
While the DMA is always free for visitors, this exhibition requires an additional paid ticket. Ticket prices begin at $16 for students.
Conservation Spotlight: Vincent Van Gogh
Nov. 18, 2021
Along with the exhibition on the Olive Groves paintings, the DMA will host additional events surrounding the monumental collection. On Nov. 18, a DMA paintings conservator will lead an audience through a discussion surrounding details on Van Gogh pieces and discoveries found embedded in the surface of the paintings.
Admission to the event is $5 for the public and free for DMA members. Learn more about the event here.
Arturo's Art& Me: Go Van Gogh
Dec. 8-11, 2021
Because the kids can't be left out of enjoying great art, the DMA has secured a day in its lineup of Arturo's Art & Me classes dedicated to the works of Van Gogh. Best suited for children ages three to five years old, the December series will take children through a storytelling experience before creating their own original works of art.
Tickets are $8 for the public and $5 for DMA members. Learn more about the event here.
