Shelter: A Sense of Place Exhibition – Opening Reception
Shelter: A Sense of Place Exhibition
Exhibition dates: June 12 - July 5, 2025
Artist Reception: June 21 (6-9pm)
7-8pm, Spoken Word / Open Mic opportunity centered around the theme of the exhibit.
In its most basic form, the notion of shelter evokes four walls, a roof, and a floor. Sizes vary, as do the materials, location, and durability of the structure. Sometimes the shelter is made from scratch. Sometimes it is found. It may serve as a temporary refuge, or as a permanent residence. A building, house, box, bench, grate, tent, car— examples of places where humans’ shelter.
Shelters are often structures, yet sometimes they are a state of where one is.
The works in this exhibition consider traditional models of shelter but also provide a lens in which the architecture of shelter can be extended beyond conventional perceptions of home, relief, and sanctuary
The works on view explore questions of who seeks shelter, and for what reasons – political, socioeconomic, or environmental.
Shelters are often structures, yet sometimes just a state of where one is.
Join us in this space, created by the participating artists, for reflection on the meaning of home and the structures—both literal and metaphorical—that provide shelter in our lives.
