If you're like me, you've started counting down the days for the 2019 State Fair of Texas and when you're going to have your next Fletcher's Corny Dog. Fret not, the fair is just around the corner (running from Sept. 27 though Oct. 20) and with it comes a whole new lineup of rides, fried foods and shows to discover. Luckily, we've made it easy for you to plan your fair experience with our list of nine new and noteworthy things to do at this year's state fair.
1. Celebrate Texas creativity
This year's State Fair of Texas theme is "Celebrating Texas Creativity" and is all about highlighting Texas-born artists, musicians, filmmakers and more, as well as Texas ideas and innovation. Enjoy 24 days of Texas creativity with shows, exhibits, foods, art, music, agriculture and more.
2. Indulge in some new fried foods
The State Fair of Texas is known for its innovative and enjoyable foodie flavors and with this year's lineup of Big Tex Choice Winners, you'll want to indulge in some sweet and savory dishes. Try the Ruth's Stuffed fried Mexi-Cone, a slow-cooked barbacoa topped with homemade salsa, pico de gallo, queso fresco served in an ice cream cone-shaped tortilla. If you needed to satisfy your sweet tooth, go for the Big Red Chicken Bread, a savory fried chicken wing in a doughnut. 3. Enjoy the foodie exhibit, Casa de Chocolate, "A Sweet Indulgent Affair"
Even if you're not a chocolate lover, this foodie-focused exhibit is a must-see. Set in the Women's Museum, Casa de Chocolate, "A Sweet Indulgent Affair" offers fairgoers a unique look into the origin and history of the sweet treat, as well as demos, classes and of course, delicious chocolate.
4. Watch new shows and acts
This year, the fair is bringing four new and exciting shows for you to enjoy. Watch Splashdance! – a high-energy performance filled with acrobats and dancers at the Esplanade fountains, or experience ¡Fiestas De Marionetas!, which features a performance and party by more than 85 handmade marionettes at the McDonald's Amphitheater. Also, back by popular demand is the World of Birds Show: Soar. Performed daily at the Fair Park Band Shell, this show features an array of stunning birds from across the globe, as well as expert knowledge on wildlife conservation.
5. Take selfies at the Contain Yourself(ie) display
Come prepared to say "cheese" and strike your best pose at this art display. Located in the historic Lagoon area, Contain Yourself(ie) is a walking selfie stroll that features 10 shipping containers beautifully hand-painted by Texas artists and is the perfect photo op for you and your crew.
6. See the Texas Cinema exhibit at the Hall of State
Don't miss the Texas Cinema exhibit at the Hall of State. This exhibit focuses on the history and impact of Texas filmmakers and performers, as well as the depiction of the Lone Star State through film. Not only will there be various film screenings to watch throughout the day, but there will be plenty of interactive opportunities and historical artifacts to view.
7. View the Fair Focus: The Photography of Kevin Brown exhibit
Enjoy some of the best takes of the State Fair of Texas by long-term freelance photographer Kevin Brown. The exhibit will be open daily at the Briscoe Carpenter Livestock Center and display some of the most intriguing shots, sites and traditions at the fair.
8. Check out a live performance
The fair has no short of musical acts and live performances (24 days of performances to be exact) to watch and enjoy with your family and friends. Catch performances by Billy Ray Cyrus, Cameo, Daughtry and more on the Chevrolet Main Stage, as well as live music by local Texas artists. Also, for the first time in State Fair of Texas history, the fair will showcase comedy performances, taking place on the Texas Monthly Stage.
9. Explore the new Midway rides
If you're a thrill-seeker, you're going to want to check out the new Midway rides. From rides that will please the kiddos, like the Tilt-a-Whirl and Dancing Clown, to rides that will get your adrenaline pumping, like the Moon Raker and Skyliner, there's plenty of attractions to satisfy even the most excitable adrenaline junkies this year.
